Hot off the press from a magical castle in Bavaria Germany
Perfectly placed in the sweeping European countryside sits one of the world’s most magical castles. Whether it’s surrounded by winter’s snow-capped peaks or summer’s luscious evergreens, its pure beauty is sure to amaze. This enchanted castle in Bavaria Germany is none other than the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle. It’s no wonder it was Disney’s inspiration for the well-known Sleeping Beauty film.
You may have heard stories about how crowded this castle can get. But don’t let this deter you from viewing this treasure in person. I am here to reassure you that it can be a truly royal experience. With a little planning and these handy tips, you’ll leave feeling like a true princess (or prince)!
Here are some tips on how to avoid the crowds when visiting the famous Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria Germany:
Why You Should Go
These awe-inspiring pictures might give you enough reason to add this castle in Bavaria Germany to your European itinerary. If not, maybe its rich history and impressive design will! Romanesque arches and a speckling of gothic embellishments are seen throughout. Its design was inspired by King Ludwig’s love for the opera. Unfortunately, he died before it was completed. If this castle had been completed it would have consisted of over 200 interior rooms! Its massive size alone will make you feel like you’ve jumped into the pages of a fairytale.
Only 1.5 hours from Munich, this destination is an easy day trip. You can spend your time exploring the castle and the charming town of Hohenschwangau. I won’t lie, there are loads of visitors every year- around 1.3 million! However, follow my tips and you should be able to circumvent the masses. Let’s explore some ways to do this, allowing you more time to gaze in awe at the surrounding view.
Where to take the best pictures of the castle
If you are planning a visit to this incredible castle in Bavaria Germany, you’ll need to find all those secret spots to photograph it. Spots that won’t have the back of hundreds of heads in it! For starters, check out the view from the parking lot. While other people were scurrying up to the top, I stopped and captured one of my best shots from there! However, one of the most iconic shots is a journey along the path to the Marienbrucke bridge. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the castle entrance. The view of the castle against the glistening lake and mountainous backdrop is astonishing. What many people don’t know is that there is a path that continues upward from here. You can find some more incredible views away from the crowds.
If you’re looking for that secret shot that no other castle-goers have, head to the lower station of Tegelbergbahn. There is a small path that drops you at the bottom of the castle’s hill. Here you have a completely different view. Take in those wide open spaces with the castle perched high above you in the Bavarian Alps. It’s also the perfect spot to enjoy a picnic or a nice glass of wine.
Another key thing to note is that no photos are allowed inside the castle, meaning these shots will become your sole evidence of the visit. As you approach the castle up close make sure to take in every gold and gilded detail you see. The architecture and vast Romanesque design alone is a reason to make this quest.
The Most Important Tip:
Plan in advance and book an early time slot
With a castle of this size, it comes at no surprise that it’s under constant watch and preservation. Because of this, you can only view the inside of the castle by a guided tour. If you want to avoid the crowds, it’s extremely important to buy your tickets online up to two days before your visit. Additionally, you should plan to visit outside of the peak summer season. Considering visiting in winter or Fall, to capture some unique perspectives.
I would also book an early time slot. While others are still sleeping or enjoying their breakfast you can be admiring all the beauty this castle has to offer. Once you’ve purchased your tickets make sure you arrive one hour before your selected time slot. This castle sells out almost every day. This means that if you miss your pick-up time, your selected time slot will be automatically pushed out. Don’t worry, If you come prepared with these tips, you won’t hit any snags on your enchanting adventure.
Getting to the castle
There are only three ways to get to the castle from the village below. The first is to walk the mere 40 minutes up hill. Make this your morning exercise and you’ll be excited for the climb. Even a luxury hotel gym can’t offer you a scenic view through the picturesque trees and Bavarian Alps. The second is a simple shuttle bus ride. And finally, the third is a luxurious horse-drawn carriage. Lay back on plush velvet seats while you’re whisked away to your castle. Just be aware, this option is definitely not the fastest. If you are looking for a quick way up the hillside, you’ll be looking at door number two.
Whichever option you choose, before you ascend, you’ll need to pick up those tickets mentioned above. The ticket center is located in the middle of Hohenschwangau. Making it to the top of that hill empty handed wont set the mood for a very royal castle experience!
Do some more exploring!
After you’ve conquered your morning avoiding the crowds at this famous castle in Bavaria Germany, you now have the whole afternoon ahead of you. You might also be feeling inspired by the rich history and architecture. Go ahead and take the rest of the day to explore the surrounding area. There is the quaint little town of Füssen that’s often forgotten. If you are booking an early slot for the castle spend the prior evening in this romantic Bavarian town. Have dinner at Steakhaus Fussen which offers stunning views of the turquoise waters running through Lech Gorge. Or stay closer to the castle and take an afternoon hike along the Pollat Gorge that runs beneath the Marienbrucke bridge. The nature and landscape surrounding the castle is incredibly gorgeous. It’s no wonder King Ludwig II wanted this to be his secret hideaway.
