Hot off the press, soaring through the skies: the best destinations to take a helicopter tour
Helicopter Tour

Sometimes the best vacations are centered around bucket list activities and thrilling excursions. For me, a trip through the clouds will always get my adrenaline pumping. I can already feel my heart starting to race as I relive my amazing memories. This, of course, reminds me of my slight fear of heights!

Here are the most beautiful destinations to indulge in a helicopter tour:

1. VIRGIN ISLANDS

Imagine soaring over vivid blue hues and islands intertwined with rocks, coral and sand. Now imagine this same experience from a “doors off” helicopter. This was one of the most thrilling and exhilarating experiences I have ever had. As you soar over the Virgin Islands, the amazing colors, beaches and landscapes aren’t the only things you will see. I was amazed as we flew over massive resort hideaways and natural wonders like the Baths at Virgin Gorda. With wind gusting through the open door, a trip to the Virgin Islands is the ultimate destination where a helicopter tour can be kicked up a notch.

2. HAWAII

Stretching along the coast of Kauai sits one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Pacific. The Na Pali Coast is a rare sight to see. Its dramatic cliffs, beaches, and plunging valleys are nothing short of magnificent. There are three ways to visit this impressive coastline; sea, land and air. For me, gliding above the coast was the clear winner. Winding through the valleys you will find lava rocks, massive green mountains, waterfalls and so-called pirate caves. Do you fancy a day exploring a forbidden island in solitude? Maybe instead you want to witness the dramatic waterfall from Jurassic Park? No matter which type of adventure you are looking for there is a helicopter tour to fit into your itinerary.

3. NEW CALEDONIA

It is no surprise that this is one of the very first reasons to visit New Caledonia on a list of 20. This was one of the most picturesque flights I have ever been on. Plus, it wasn’t just an afternoon excursion. It was a commute from the busy capital of Noumea to my resort. It was like I was plucked from the airport and dropped into a sandy, alpine-like oasis. Tall pine trees, turquoise blue waters and lush foliage made for a jaw dropping flight. If you are looking to visit the Isle of the Pines I would highly recommend a commute via helicopter. It may just be the best part of your trip!

4. VICTORIA FALLS, AFRICA

On the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia are the incredible Victoria Falls – otherwise known as “the smoke that thunders”. In this beautiful part of Africa, there are a few ways to experience these plummeting falls. If you have the stomach for it, you could take a dip in Devils Pool  or go out exploring the Zambezi by boat. Both Zimbabwe and Zambia offer some incredible hiking trails. But the only way to see these falls in all their glory is by getting a bird’s-eye view. Many helicopters even have bubble shaped windows which are perfect for getting those panoramic views.

5. JASPER NATIONAL PARK, CANADA

Canada is home to some of the most naturally beautiful destinations I have ever seen. Spread across Jasper National Park are numerous lakes where you can see straight to the rocky floor. A helicopter tour here will provide incredible views and scenic discoveries that would take years to hike. One minute you are flying over these turquoise blue waters when the next you are circling the glacier peak that crafts these incredible lakes. If you are lucky you might even spot bears or mountain lions in their natural element.

6. SWITZERLAND

Switzerland is one of my absolute favorite vacation spots. I have been incredibly fortunate to visit a number of jaw-dropping destinations across this country. If you are visiting the Swiss Alps, there is a long list of locations that would make for a memorable helicopter ride. Are you staying near Zermatt? I would recommend a scenic ride around the peak of the Matterhorn. In the Jungfrau Region there are a number of rugged cliffs, glacier peaks and of course the famous James Bond film location. If you are visiting Lucerne, this is yet another perfect destination for a helicopter tour. You will be in awe as you glide past snow-capped Mount Pilatus. No matter where you visit in Switzerland, your chances of uncovering astonishing views from a helicopter are very likely!

7. ICELAND

A slightly different destination, Iceland should definitely be atop the list of helicopter tours. From Reykjavik you are promised sights of Glymur, the highest waterfall in Iceland. Many tours even offer the incredible opportunity to land on top of a glacier. Breathe in the crisp air as you look across the pristine snowy landscape – these are destinations you can’t even hike to! You can also soar to valleys with boiling hot springs and mud pots. No matter what time of year you travel, this destination is sure to bring the magic.

8. CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

Home to Table Mountain, Robben Island, and the Twelve Apostles is the mountainous coast of Cape Town. This is yet another destination in Africa that provides some incredible backdrops for a scenic helicopter tour. One of the most luxurious ways to spend a vacation in South Africa is to visit the lush winelands. Indulge in a helicopter ride, departing from Cape Town, and hop to each delicious winery while enjoying a top down view of the rolling vineyards.

Amazing post! I am not sure if I would be as brave as you are to fly in a “door-off” helicopter though.

After reading this post, I definitely want to see Switzerland from the view of a helicopter. The Matterhorn definitely seems like something I’d really want to see! However, how close to the mountain do you think we’d be taken? I’d really like to fly up there, walk around and then fly back to wherever we had come from.
