Home / Adventure / Interview: Alexandra Carson

Upon stumbling across an Instagram account called _alexinwanderland, I was taken through a world of sunshine, beaches, far off places, and yoga. One look through this gallery and I could immediately tell that this beautiful long-legged blonde was truly living her life and enjoying it to the fullest extent.  I always love a person who is passionate about life and travel, but what I love even more is a couple who loves travel so much that they set off to conquer their dreams together. Alexandra Carson and her partner Michael Gallagher recently quit their jobs and bought a one-way ticket to Italy to explore Europe and share their stories on their blog, couplescoordinates.com. Originally from California, they now call Florence their home base to exploring the world. Must be nice!

From one of my favorite posts on Alexandra’s Instagram: “You know that dream you have? The one where you just get on a plane and go? Move to a foreign country? Explore the world? OK well maybe this is my dream but it is seriously something I’ve craved for as long as I can remember, and I am beyond thankful to have my best friend and love be as crazy and as full of wanderlust as I am! Quitting our jobs and leaving everything we’ve ever known behind in less than a week!! It’s not about running away or trying to escape something. It’s about wanting to discover the world as it really is! America we love you always…but hello ONE WAY tickets to FLORENCE, ITALY.” (scroll down to see the interview)

AN INTERVIEW WITH ALEX

1) How did you and Michael meet and what inspired you to start a blog together?

Michael and I met at a small house party in Malibu, CA. We both have always been pretty passionate about traveling, even before we met. So once we realized that we both had the same dream (to travel the world and inspire others to do the same), the blog just seemed like the best way to share it with everyone.

2) You both recently left your jobs to travel the world. What type of work were you in?

Michael was working in enterprise IT sales and I was working in sales as well as doing some commercial acting, which has always been another passion of mine.

3) What is your ultimate goal for your blog? Is it something you do as hobby or are you in it to win it?

Our ultimate goal for the blog is to inspire others to go on adventures and travel. To show people that if you are willing to take a risk, even with very little savings or planning, anything is possible! We absolutely love this life of adventure, and love blogging, so we hope we can do this as long as we can.

4) How long do you plan on living in Florence and what is next for you?

We will for sure be living in Florence (for the most part) until December. Then we have just recently decided to head to Bali for a couple of months of beach life, and we have nothing planned after that. I can say we are considering New Zealand and Australia.

5) To date, what has been your favorite part of your travels?

So far my favorite part of our travels has been visiting Italy’s coastal towns. I absolutely love everything about them. The food, the beauty, the charming people. What’s not to love?

6) You seem to stay very fit, what is your work out regimen and how do you keep it up while traveling in Europe, especially with all the delicious food there?

Thank you so much! We are both very active people so we are constantly hiking, swimming, and doing yoga whenever possible. It doesn’t matter where we are in the world we are always doing something. We try to choose healthy options when eating out, especially since we both LOVE to eat! But I do believe that life is about balance and would be no fun without indulging in some pizza and gelato every now and then. It definitely does take a lot of work and dedication to stay fit while traveling. I love YouTube yoga and pilates videos and always do them wherever we go. I also run a few days a week and try to make it to the gym at least once.

7) Do you follow any blogs yourself and if so, which ones are your favorite?

I do follow a few travel blogs myself, one of which being Wildluxe, which I absolutely love! I also keep up with World of Wanderlust and The Blonde Abroad. I think the travel community is really fun. It’s always great to see what like-minded people are up to.

8) Any specific people who inspire you?

As a yogi traveler, I am constantly inspired by Rachel Brathen (aka yogi girl). Her amazing mindfulness and strength is always motivating. She is such a beautiful soul and is always spreading love and positivity.

9) What is one thing about yourself that most people don’t know?

One thing that most people don’t know about me is that I love to cook…and eat! No joke. I am constantly eating. I’m always the one to pull snacks out of my purse and I will actually get hangry if I’ve gone more than a couple hours without food. Michael always knows when it’s time to feed me. Haha!

10) Do you have any advice for people considering to do what you and Michael have done (leaving it all behind to travel the world) ?

My best advice for people considering to do what we’ve done is to GO! Don’t wait to think about it, don’t save up just a little more money, don’t worry about the outcome, just GO! I said this to all of my friends and family before we left and I’ll say it to you, worst comes to worst you can always go home. You only have one life, you have to live it to the fullest.
