The Best Location for your Lake Como Vacation: Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni
Hot off the press from the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni: the best location for your Lake Como vacation
Just underneath the Southern border of Switzerland, sits the Northern Lakes District of Italy. Lago di Como, otherwise known as Lake Como, is this region’s glistening crown jewel. These waters attract hundreds of thousands of travelers every year – including George Clooney, Brad Pitt and John Legend (no big deal!). With annual travelers like these you know the accommodations are going to be more than luxurious. In Bellagio, the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni does not disappoint.
I drove to Lake Como from Switzerland via Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. This was easily one of the most scenic road trips in the world (more to come on that later). Arriving in Lake Como was like driving straight into the pages a fairytale. The tiny roads curved through mountainous terrain, with glimpses of the shimmering lake between the trees. It was lined with brightly-colored dramatic Italian villas, making it even more magical. But the most magical of all, was the villa I called home for a few days. One of the most luxurious accommodations in the region – The grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni.
Let’s explore the best place to stay for your next Lake Como vacation:
THE MOST GLAMOROUS ACCOMMODATIONS
There is only one hotel in the region with both a 5-star luxury rating and a perfect location for exploring Lake Como on foot. Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is one of the oldest and most elegant hotels in Bellagio, a popular town on the lake. The hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of all the best local shops and restaurants.
Perched right on the edge of the lake, the panoramic views throughout the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni are breathtaking; even from the guest rooms. Beautiful Italian-style gardens are perfectly manicured throughout the grounds, with blooming lavender and pink hydrangeas. The pastel-painted gardens are the perfect compliment to the impressive yellow and white villa that houses the property.
The traditional Italian décor stands out with impressive ornate detail. My room, with it’s beautiful textiles and shades of red, made me feel like part of a royal family. Beautiful antique furnishings were carefully placed throughout with bright pops of color. To make this experience even more luxurious, there were two massive floor to ceiling windows that opened up to a marvelous Lake Como view.
Housed in the historic villa of the property is The Beauty Farm; a luxurious and tranquil spa. The Beauty Farm is open from April to October and is inspired by one main philosophy: “true well-being can only come from the free flow of energy which creates harmony between mind and body”.
Yet another top-notch experience is the magical ambiance amongst the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni’s restaurants. Mistral, located on the main terrace, may just boast some of the best views in Bellagio, on top their delicious tasting menu. During the day, take a break from the pool and enjoy La Goletta. Some seriously delicious menu items are crafted from the chef’s regional and Mediterranean inspirations.
Guests at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni also have access to the villa’s stunning lake-front swimming pool, complete with plush lounge chairs and gourmet food service. The fully-equipped gym and fitness center was also top notch. One thing I really enjoyed was the nightly live music in the lounge – the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. This property set such a wonderful tone to my Lake Como vacation.
EXPLORING LAKE COMO
When looking at a map of Lake Como, Bellagio is located at the fork of the Y – dead center to all the surrounding action! Varrena, Menaggio and of course Como are just a handful of the other quaint towns placed amongst these shores. In Bellagio, or in any of these lakeshore villages, there is no need for a map or guidebook. All you need is a comfy pair of shoes. Set out down the charming stone walkways, while uncovering tiny hidden wine bars and pizzerias around every turn. Also, perhaps you’ll be like me and fall in love with the flower boxes adorning every quaint window and doorway. Strolling amongst the lush gardens and 50’s styled mansions will be more than enough to fall in love with this town. Plus, ending the evenings with a nightcap at Villa Serbelloni’s outdoor restaurant is the perfect end to a wonderful day.
The best way to explore around the lake is to hire a boat. You’ll see multiple lovely little boats docked around Bellagio and can book a private tour with a guide. Not only is it the quickest way to explore the surrounding towns, but there are also some exclusive restaurants only accessible by boat. If you are on a romantic holiday cruise on over to Ristorante Crotto dei Platani. This restaurant is set amongst fresh flowers, enchanting scenery and waterfront views.
Another excursion you can add to your Lake Como vacation is a day-trip to Lenno. Here you’ll be surrounded by an abundance of olive trees. Not only can you press your own extra-tasty olive oil, but the scenery is magnificent. Staying at Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni means you also have access to exclusive excursions outside of the area. Take a day trip to Bergamo a romanesque town speckled with intricate cathedrals. If you are traveling through April and October, don’t miss a trip to the Borromean Islands. Isola Bella, one of the four islands on Lake Maggiore, is home to some of the most lavish gardens in the country. Ooh la la!
Staying in the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni was an enchanting experience that had me wide-eyed at every moment! A Lake Como vacation would not be complete without a stop at this elegant property!
