Hot off the press from all over the globe!
Discover some of the most romantic adventure resorts on Earth!
From the dreamy white sands of Indonesia, or the many wonders of Africa, to the jawdropping Swiss Alps, these properties are the creme de la creme. Here are my top picks for the most romantic adventure resorts in the world.
1. Hotel Villa Honegg in Switzerland
Hotel Villa Honegg makes my list of the most romantic adventure hotels for multiple reasons, although, if I had to choose one, I’d go with its panoramic views. Switzerland is one of my favorite countries to visit, and every time I go, I make sure to spend at least a night or two here. With its rolling green hills, infinity pool views over Lake Lucerne, and charming aesthetic, this property is sure to wow even the most discerning of travelers.
Naturally, Switzerland is one the greatest places for stunning mountain scenery, and so it should come as no surprise that the adventures which can be enjoyed from here are insanely picturesque. Guest can access hiking trails directly from Villa Honegg, sending them on some of the most breathtaking morning hikes you can imagine. A number of other activities are available including biking, canoeing, water skiing, mountain biking, or even helicopter tours around the area. Make sure you bring your camera, because you won’t find photo ops this spectacular in too many other places around the world. Hike or take the Hammetschwand Lift to get to the top of Mt. Burgenstock for the ultimate panorama.
2. Tongabezi at Victoria Falls in Zambia
Fall in love at Tongabezi! This property is most certainly one of the most romantic adventure resorts on Earth, and worth every second of the journey to get there. This intimate lodge is comprised of 6 private houses and 5 river cottages, which offer epic river views and stunning Zambian decor. Perfectly blending luxury with a nature filled experience, Tongabezi is nothing short of enchanting. One of my favorite memories was dining on a floating platform blessed with lanterns and torches. The ambiance was out of this world!
There are so many things to do while staying at Tongabezi. My suggestion is to take advantage of the incredible excursions included in your stay. Bush walks, game drives, river boat adventures and trips to the local market are some of the many things you can experience. My favorite was swimming in Devil’s Pool at the majestic Victoria Falls, one of the 7 Natural World Wonders. It was something I’ll never forget.
3. Amangiri, Utah
There’s no way I’m going to leave Amangiri off of my list of the world’s most romantic adventure resorts. Located in Utah, it sits on 600 acres of scenic desert beauty. There are no words to capture the powerful feeling this place radiates into the atmosphere. The resort is built right into the rock and blends in with the bottomless canyons and towering plateaus around it. Small and intimate, like all Aman properties, Amangiri has 34 guest suites, each one positioned to get a private view of the landscape
In my opinion, the adventures at Amangiri are as good as it gets. The hiking around Horseshoe Bend provides views like you’ve never seen before. With Antelope Canyon, Lake Powell (and so much more) right outside of the resort, you’ll never run out of things to do. In fact, you’ll wish you’d booked your stay for longer. Be sure to book their private dinner under the stars with a performance by the local Navajo people.
4. Six Senses Yao Noi on Yao Noi Island, Thailand
If island hopping excursions and water adventures are your thing, Thailand is the place to go! Six Senses Yao Noi is definitely one of the most romantic adventure resorts on earth. Situated on the hillside of the Island of Koh Yao Noi, this eco-friendly property boasts, well everything! Starting with unbeatable service. The staff is very attentive and incredibly warm. I felt right at home as a guest of this property. Another important thing to note about this property is its location. As one of the few Thai islands left that is not overrun with tourists, unspoiled beauty and local energy is in abundance everywhere you go.
I recommend experiencing as many of the activities they provide as possible. First, take in the blissful views from the Hilltop Reserve infinity pool. You can enjoy a truly spectacular sunrise breakfast from up there. Another experience I don’t suggest missing is a beach movie. Snuggle up with your beloved, coconut and popcorn in hand, ready to watch a movie in the outdoor (on the sand) theatre. Be sure not to skip the amazing luxury spa. Each treatment room overlooks a rainforest waterfall scene, providing extreme relaxation that brings the outdoors in. Last but certainly not least, enjoy an island-hopping boat trip to the scenic neighboring islands, which offer a whole new vibe.
5. Nihi Sumba Island, Indonesia
Step into total luxury at Nihi Sumba Island. This eco-friendly luxury resort will always have a place in the top most romantic adventure resorts in the world! Why you ask? First of all, it has been named the best hotel in the world by Travel + Leisure for the second year in a row. Secondly, this property is hands down one of the most incredible places I have ever had the pleasure of staying.
This private island, known for its tropical forests, waterfalls, white sand beaches and turquoise blue waters, is something out of a dream. There is so much to explore, and so many unique adventures to be had. There are 28 villas ranging from 1-5 bedrooms, each built on terraces, with their own pool and veranda. Built in the style of a Sumbanese house, the villas have multiple levels and are topped with conical thatched roofs.
While all of the dining experiences at Nihi Sumba are spectacular, I suggest to opt for in-villa dining one evening. I was blown away at the incredible attention to detail. With flowers hanging all around and lanterns glowing, this private dinner was unforgettable.
Lastly, I recommend heading to the Nihi Oak Spa Safari. You can start with a 90 minute trek through rugged hills, ancient villages and scenic rice fields to the secluded Nihi Oka Valley. If you aren’t up for the hike, an open air Land Rover will take you there. After arriving, you will be invited to a delicious breakfast, and then led to your own private pavilion with magnificent views. From the privacy of your own pavilion, you can enjoy massages, reflexology, wraps and body scrubs. The spa offers yoga and meditation as well. Once you’ve had your fill of pampering, the Land Rover will return you to your villa.
6. Wolwedans Dunes Lodge in Namibia
With a landscape that is one-of-a-kind, and service that checks all the boxes, Wolwedans easily earns its spot on the list of the most romantic adventure resorts on earth! Have you ever looked out of your resort to vast open spaces and rolling red dunes? If you haven’t ever stayed in the Namib desert, my guess is no! It is a truly special experience to feel the African desert breeze on your face. Or better yet, watch the wild oryx roam freely in their natural habitat. Wolwedans Dunes Lodge is a place that will capture your heart and soul. It is not only extremely intimate, with only 9 chalets, it is also one of the most unique places I have ever been a guest at. This resort is Namibia’s most luxurious property and certainly worth every penny.
While the property itself is extraordinary, many spectacular moments can be had outside of the property. Some of these activities are: a nature drive with sundowners, a nature walk with a picnic, a safari drive, horse riding, village sustainability tours, scenic flights over the dunes and hot air ballooning. The local wildlife includes giraffes, zebra, cheetahs, leopards and the commonly seen African oryx. Another recommendation I have is to treat yourself to a stay at the Boulders Safari Camp as well! This separate but close by “sister” property is a luxury tented camp that will blow your socks off. Nestled at the base of a cluster of gigantic boulders, this property is comprised of only 4 chalet-tents. It offers tranquility like none other. The terrain is quite different from the lodge, yet both properties are equally spectacular. I definitely suggest splitting your time at both.
