Orcas Island: Back for Seconds!

Home / Travel & Journal / Orcas Island: Back for Seconds!

When I first visited Orcas Island, part of the San Juan Islands in Washington State, I was not prepared for the kind of beauty I would be experiencing. I did not allow myself enough time to soak in the charm and splendor of the destination.

My Orcas Island appetite had not yet been satisfied and like a hungry girl, I went back for more (very typical of me)!

My first stop was the picturesque village of Eastsound, where I picked up some organic produce for my picnic. It was a perfect 75 degrees with a slight breeze and an abundance of bright wildflowers in bloom. The scent of blossoming Jasmine and Gardenia filled the air and delighted my senses. It was straight out of a storybook.

After purchasing the perfect picnic ingredients I drove to Moran State Park, then up the winding hill towards Mount Constitution. Halfway up the mountain I spotted my very own version of picnic heaven. As I began to lay out my floral blanket on the grass, I was all of the sudden standing in the middle of a massive swarm of bees. YIKES!!! They must have been attracted to the bright colors on my dress and on my blanket. I swiftly got back into my car and waited for the swarm to pass, but it was a close call and quite frightening. Hence, I enjoyed my picnic with one eye on guard.

I drove the rest of the way up to the summit of Mount Constitution where the views boast a deep plunge down to the sparkling ocean and all of the San Juans in the background.

Then it was time for a little snooze by the lake, followed by some tasty ice cream. Not a rough day, I must admit!

To wrap it all up, was dinner overlooking the bay at the Orcas Hotel. Oh what a view and oh what a day! God has been good to me.
