The Taj Mahal – it’s a magical creation of marble, crafted oh-so-finely, and all in the name of love! I had seen it in many photos, but nothing was like seeing it in person. It’s a place I’d always longed to visit, and finally my desire came to fruition.  I was silent, as I stepped onto the grounds of the Taj Mahal. Chills ran through my entire body. It was magnificent! Awestruck by the grandeur of this architectural wonder. It was truly spell-binding. Its pure beauty makes it immediately apparent why millions travel here annually and seek advice through a Taj Mahal travel guide.

7 TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT

  1. Arrive Early: We are not alone in our desire to visit this world wonder. Approximately 7-8 million people come from far and wide. Each with a desire to cast adoring eyes on the marble mausoleum each year. Make sure to arrive as early as possible to beat the crowds and, of course, the heat. Gates open at 6 A.M., and a line usually forms even earlier!
  2. Stay at the Oberoi Amarvilas: We stayed at the Oberoi Amarvilas, with stunning and rare views of the Taj Mahal from its private grounds. With incredible ease, the concierge happily, and quickly, arranged transportation and a private guide. The biggest perk is that this hotel sits just minutes from the Taj Mahal.
  3. Enter From the South Gate: From the Oberoi Amarvilas, a rickshaw will have you at the south entry gate in a matter of minutes. The south gate provides the easiest access. Yet the biggest perk, is that it can be less crowded than the eastern and western gates.

  1. Don’t Bring Food or Drink: No food or drink is allowed once you walk through the entrance. Your bag will be checked. However, with your entrance fee you will receive a bottle of water to keep you cool in the searing Indian heat.
  2. Avoid Friday: Don’t forget, the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so plan accordingly.
  3. Don’t Bring a Tripod: Leave your tripod and GoPro stick at the hotel, they’re not allowed inside.
  4. Get Ready to Walk: Vehicles are not allowed within 500 meters of the Taj, so if you come by car be prepared to walk.

No where else will you get a view from the Taj Mahal from not only the lobby, but every single guest room! Additionally, the food is outstanding!

The Taj Mahal will stun even the most jaded of travelers! Its opulent beauty adorns the landscape with its majesty.

WHERE TO SNAP THE PERFECT PICTURE

As you can imagine, photo opportunities are endless at the Taj Mahal. The trickiest part entails getting a great shot with as few visitors as possible in your frame. (Trust me, it’s not easy!) If you’re a photography enthusiast, you’ll be delighted by the marble facade’s change in color. As the day progresses, the stone displays a spectrum of pearly white to rose to sun-kissed gold.

It wouldn’t be a Taj Mahal Travel Guide if I didn’t provide you with some insta-worthy tips to capturing the perfect photos. Here is a quick list of the best spots to snap the perfect shot:

  • The Lotus Pond: Here, at the of the pond, you’ll capture a reflection of the Taj Mahal in the glassy pool.
  • Yamuna River: Across the river on the eastern wall there’s a small temple that offers a magnificent view of the palace. Or you can hire a boatsman to ferry you to the center of the Yamuna River for a picturesque perspective.
  • Agra Fort: Another UNESCO world heritage site, the fort positions you for an excellent photo opportunity.
  • The Oberoi Armavilas Hotel: Hopefully you’ve heeded my suggestion to indulge in a stay at the Oberoi Armavilas. If so, you will be tickled to find that every room has breathtaking views of the Taj Mahal. The alabaster formation sits proudly in the distance just waiting for you to snap away!

AROUND THE TAJ MAHAL

There are several outlying buildings that are fun to explore while you are visiting the mausoleum. One of them is a red sandstone mosque which rests to the left of the Taj. This mosque serves as a place of worship for Friday prayers. Afterwards head to the right of the Taj. Here, sits the Jawab, which is an exact replica of the left-side mosque. Since it faces west, away from Mecca, the building is not used for religious prayers.  Its sole purpose is to maintain symmetry in the grand scheme of construction. You can take a guided tour of the entire property or meander through the sites on your own.

THE PERFECT ENDING

If you are not exhausted from your early morning expedition, I recommend a little journey to see the artistic side of Agra. I consider this the quirky cultural addition to my Taj Mahal Travel Guide. Each evening there is a live performance of Mohabbat the Taj at the famous theater Kalakriti Cultural and Convention Center. The musical illustrates the love story between Emporer Shajahan and his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Complete grandeur of the Royal’s lives, and the history of the Taj, is brought to life through song and dance.

To keep it authentic, the show is performed in Hindi and Urdu. You will receive a headset narrating in English so you won’t have any trouble following along. It is also quite simple to arrange a ticket, which includes a driver to pick you up at your hotel and drop you off after the show. Adult beverages are available at the theatre. So sit back, sip back and enjoy the performance.
